Caldwell Lumber Company, Inc. is a full service lumber yard serving
professionals and do-it-yourselfers in south central Wisconsin for over
80 years. With yards in Columbus and Reeseville we're just a short drive
northeast of Madison.
In 1919 R.J. Caldwell and his cousin WIlliam Mair purchased the yard
from Brittingham and Hixon. The lumberyard, known as Mair and Caldwell,
included a feed mill and also sold coal, a major source of heat at the time.
Ironically it was the sale of coal that kept us afloat during the Great
Depression. After William Mair died in 1940, the yard was renamed R.J.
Caldwell Lumber Company. In 1949 Bill Caldwell joined the company,
and two years later his brother John was also working there. After their
father's death in 1954, the two boys became partners. Today, Doug and Tom
(John's sons) represent a third generation of Caldwells in the lumber business.
A lot has happened over the last 80 years. From just trying to keep the
doors open in the 30's to being voted "Lumber Dealer of the Year" by the
Wisconsin Retail Lumber Assocation in 1999. Through it all we've always tried
to focus on two things: our customers and the future. With that in mind we felt
a web presence was absolutely necessary as we move into the next century.
We decided that power tools would be a great place to start, and would
welcome any
comments or suggestions you may have.
Sincerely,
John, Doug & Tom
